The Scripture I Use to Teach on Marriage, Sex, Dating and Relationships

When I served in two rural towns with a lack of college presence, there was hesitation among church leadership to use college students in youth ministry. The decision to use college students is largely based on need and location. There are both positives and negatives of using them. Younger adults have more energy and enthusiasm than most more experienced adults.
However, young college kids were young teenagers less than 5 years ago.
The following observations reveal some of the challenges and realities about life as a single, young, youth minister. Leading a youth ministry inevitably means that personal and professional life will overlap. The schedule of youth ministry makes a social life, especially outside of church, challenging. Youth group gatherings, Bible studies, and church meetings all happen regularly.
They also often happen in the evenings. Many youth leaders end up with evenings a week committed to the church, and those times are when most peers have time to go out and socialize. Finding a date, or maintaining friendships can be difficult because of a lack of time. Setting up boundaries and dedicating time helps balance personal and professional life.

At worst, the pain and awkwardness of those continued interactions between the former-couple leads one or both of them to drop out of youth group altogether; sometimes for a season, and sometimes forever. It was less than two months. Every time I deal with a break-up, I try my best to remember my high school break-ups. Feeling legitimately rejected legitimately hurts. The awkwardness of a fresh breakup sends out ripples that can make everyone in the room feel uncomfortable.
After a period of time usually shorter than a month, a lot of that awkwardness has worn off, and a student can be coaxed and encouraged to return. Begin that mentoring relationship with the expectation that the student will come back to youth group in a few weeks. After the first few meetings, invite other students — obviously not the ex — from the youth group to join you. Leave a comment below. Yes, break up was tough, they had known each other they whole lives, it was the first real dating experience for both.

Study youth when ministry when different youth than their married counterparts. A young, single youth without the responsibilities of a spouse or children must have more flexibility in their schedule, right? Actually ministry need to maintain friendships and when is not unique to the married or with kids crowd. Obviously children and a married relationship require different amounts ministry energy and availability. However, a young, single person can felt taken advantage of because others assume they ministry put personal needs on the back burner for the sake of church responsibilities.

Ordinarily, as two teens date over time they move toward isolation and away from accountability. I challenge students to move in the opposite direction. Even for adults. Dear friends like these will be there for you when you break up, which would otherwise be a very lonely ordeal. I think the best way to learn about your gender and the opposite gender is to have a group of friends that comprises both guys and girls.
If you are called to marry, God has given you the best friend you were created for, but outside of marriage members of the opposite sex are not able to be your best friend.

If you are a student reading this post, you probably have been faced with the frustration of the rules that a youth pastor or leader put on you for dating.
That is a parent decision. It is not up to you to tell students that they cannot date someone of the opposite sex. So, the answer to this blog post is fairly simple, you cannot control it, but I want to take this discussion to a different level, how do we approach dating in our youth group? I tend to take a more conservative approach to this than most.
I look at teen dating as a waste of time, personally. Please do not be offended by that, but the odds are slim to none that a relationship in middle school and high school will continue. Some do, and that is great, but many do not. More often, I see relationships built in student ministry, and then a result is horrible and ugly break ups that affect the friendships, cause drama and, in a lot of cases, tend to be uncomfortable for other students surrounding these dating issues.

Waiting, Dating, and Mating
If you spend a few minutes eavesdropping on a conversation between a group of teens you will very quickly see that the topic of dating occupies much of their thoughts and conversations. To have a successful discussion it is important to get off on the right foot. While some teens may be involved in very serious relationships, others may not have had a first date yet, may not be allowed to date, or have no interest in dating.
For this reason, start off with non-threatening questions. Dont be over anxious to jump in with all of the answers. Look for volunteers to answer rather than requiring everyone to share.
